Parents warned about student being approached

A letter went out the parents of students from the Butler School District after a man tried to ask a young girl if she needed a ride from a Butler bus stop this morning.

Superintendent Dale Lumley said not many details were known, but the district thought the issue serious enough to send home a note.

“We felt that it was necessary to inform people,” he said.

The letter sent home read:

“Dear Parent(s)/Guardian(s):

This is to inform you that the Butler City Police notified us that a student reported that he/she was approached by a black male driving a silver SUV in the Zeigler Avenue/Kaufman Drive vicinity. The man stopped and asked if the student needed a ride to school. When the student replied “no”, he drove off. These are all of the details that we have.

Please be alert and aware while your children are at the bus stop, both before and after school. If you observe something that seems suspicious, please be sure to report that information either to the principal or to the police. Our goal is to keep our parent community informed so that together we can work to maintain the safety of our students.
