Tip leads to arrest of man on drug, driving charges

Police: 'Hidden compartment' in car

SUMMIT TWP — An Allegheny County man was arrested after state police say they discovered a gram of raw heroin in a secret compartment in his car.

Brandon A. Dillard, 39, of Penn Hills is being held in the Butler County Prison on $50,000 bail. He faces 10 charges including felony drug possession.

An anonymous tipster reporting a drug deal Monday afternoon in Butler alerted police patrol and vice officers to be on the watch for the suspect’s car.

About 1:30 p.m., troopers pulled over Dillard in the 200 block of Freeport Road in Summit Township. Police immediately smelled a “strong odor” of marijuana coming from the vehicle, according to court documents.

The defendant admitted to earlier smoking a marijuana cigarette, police said. Troopers also spotted what they believed was drug contraband in the car.

Dillard gave police his consent to search the car. Officers found a digital scale and suspected drug packaging materials.

Eventually, police made a more interesting discovery. Stashed in a “hidden compartment” in the car, documents said, was suspected raw heroin, unspecified pills and marijuana.

Raw heroin is uncut heroin that is often diluted and sold in single-dose glassine bags. Among the evidence seized from Dillard’s car were empty glassine bags.

The suspect was taken to Butler Memorial Hospital for a blood test. Toxicology results are pending.

Later, he was arraigned on charges of possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance, driving under the influence of drugs, possession of a controlled substance and drug paraphernalia, and possession of a small amount of marijuana.

Dillard also is charged with driving with a suspended license, driving without a license and not using his turn signals.
