Glitch prevents donations

Day of Giving will be rescheduled

PITTSBURGH — People who wanted to donate to Butler County nonprofit groups Tuesday during the Day of Giving will have to give another day.

The Pittsburgh Foundation announced that the Day of Giving effort was suspended because the computer operation of Kimbia, the online fundraising and crowdfunding firm for Day of Giving, had technical difficulties that kept people from donating.

“We regret to make this decision, but we felt it was the right decision based on the feedback we received from donor experience and what we were seeing on the site,” said Christopher Whitlach, the foundation’s manager of marketing and communications.

“We want to make sure that what is one of the most popular programs for the Pittsburgh Foundation and the community continues to excite the public and provide an opportunity to support the nonprofits.”

Fifty-one nonprofit organizations in Butler County could have received donations and could have shared in a $20,000 match pool from the Endowment for Butler County.

Endowment chairman Amy Beiler was disappointed at the news, but still is hopeful for the Day of Giving.

“We would like to encourage people who were discouraged from giving by the technical glitch and can only hope that it would be a stronger day than ever on the next try,” she said.

But Whitlach said, “Anybody that had the opportunity to make a donation successfully, those are secure. They will count toward the $20,000 match pool, as well as any donations made during the rescheduled day.”

The technical difficulties began about noon Tuesday. The site kept people from completing their donations, and kept some from being able to load the donation forms.

Before those problems, the Pittsburgh Foundation was on pace to raise $1.5 million.

The site is PittsburghGives.org.

The Pittsburgh Foundation does not yet have a figure on how much money was raised for Butler County nonprofits. Whitlach said they hope to have the figure by today.

The Day of Giving will be rescheduled at a date to be determined.

“Before we even announce a rescheduling, we’re going to do testing on technology until we’re completely satisfied, so no decision has been made as of now,” he said. “We’re going to make sure we select technology that ensures a proper experience for all of our participants.”

All 51 Butler County nonprofits were contacted about the suspension of the Day of Giving.

They are listed on butlergives.org.

“I expect they will all be a go with the reschedule provided that we can prove that the technology is going to work,” he said.

Kimbia, the online fundraising firm, was used by 54 community foundations nationwide, and they too had technical problems.

The Pittsburgh Foundation’s Day of Giving covers Butler, Allegheny and Westmoreland counties.
