WASHINGTON — Philadelphia Phillies starting pitcher Charlie Morton is out for the season because of a torn left hamstring.

Morton is scheduled for surgery on the hamstring next Monday, and recovery time is expected to be six-to-eight months.

“I feel bad for Charlie. Great guy. I feel bad for him and for us,” Phillies manager Pete Mackanin said before Wednesday night’s game against Washington. “He was starting to throw really well. It’s a shame.”

Morton was injured while running out of the batter’s box on a sacrifice attempt during at Milwaukee on Saturday and went on the 15-day disabled list a day later.

“It was just one of those freak accidents,” Mackanin said.

Morton, a 32-year-old right-hander, is 1-1 with a 4.15 ERA in four starts this season.

A replacement in the rotation has not been named.
