Butler grad Fennell honored by award

CALIFORNIA, Pa. — Butler graduate Mick Fennell, a senior outfielder-pitcher on the California (Pa.) University baseball team, was recently a co-recipient of the Bruce Dal Canton Pitching Award.SRU's Barbano, Wilcox Athletes of WeekGrove City archers finalists for awards

The award is given to a Vulcan pitcher who truly exemplifies greatness of character. Fennell shares the award with fellow senior Jack Dennis.

Returning to the starting rotation this season, Fennell is 5-1 with one save in nine appearances. He leads the staff in earned run average.

SLIPPERY ROCK — Slippery Rock University sophomore Nina Barbano and senior Erin Wilcox have been named PSAC West Women's Tennis and Lacrosse Athletes of the Week, respectively.

Barbano went 2-0 at No. 2 singles and No. 2 doubles for The Rock. The wins came against Clarion and Charleston, ranked No. 5 in the region.

Wilcox scored four goals as SRU narrowly missed an upset of No. 8 Mercyhurst, losing 10-9 in overtime. She also scored two goals and had an assist in a win over Shippensburg. Wilcox has scored in every game this season and has 48 goals on the year.

GROVE CITY — Two Grove City archers are finalists for awards through the National Archery in the Schools Program's (NASP) On Target for Life Awards and Recognition Program.

Michelle Clauss of Grove City Christian Academy is a finalist for the Superhero Award, recognizing an unpaid volunteer who makes an outstanding positive impact on their team.

Trenton Clauss of the Trinitas Study Center in Grove City is a finalist for the Courage Award, given to an individual who has overcome a major life event or disability, yet continues to inspire others through NASP.

Winners will be announced at the awards ceremony following the NASP National Tournament.
