SV grad Smith misses Sox debut

TORONTO — Seneca Valley graduate Kevan Smith was scratched from what would have been his major league debut Monday night after being injured during the team stretch.

Smith suffered from back spasms.

“It will go down in folklore history of weird things that happen to people,” White Sox manager Robin Ventura said.

Smith was recalled from Triple-A Sunday when catcher Alex Avila (right hamstring) went on the 15-day disabled list.

Smith is the first Butler BlueSox alumnus to reach the major leagues. He hit .347 for the BlueSox in 2010 with 35 runs scored, 59 hits and 10 doubles.

The BlueSox have had a dozen players drafted by major league teams in their seven-year history. The White Sox drafted Smith in the seventh round in 2011.
