Betty J. Spencer, 88, of Slippery Rock passed away Sunday at Autumn Grove in Harrisville.

She was born Aug. 15, 1927, in Clay Township, to Albert Theodore Causer and Sophia Gardner Causer. She graduated from Slippery Rock High School. She married Harry Frederick “Fred” Spencer July 24, 1946, was a homemaker and retired as a nurse's aide, having worked at the family owned and operated Spencer Retirement Home in Slippery Rock for more than 17 years.

She was a member of Slippery Rock United Methodist Church for 73 years, where she belonged to the King's Daughters and various committees. She had belonged to Harrisville Deer Hunters Auxiliary.

Survivors include her husband, Fred, at home; two daughters, Sandra L. Riddle and her husband, Rodger, of Harrisville and Deborah J. Hedin and her husband, Mark, of Philadelphia; her son, Frederick R. Spencer Sr. and his fiancee, Jocelyn Lewis, of Slippery Rock; 11 grandchildren, Mark Bell (Tiffany), Kristina Martin, Jaime Trezona (Aaron), Christopher Hedin (fiancee Brenna Flatley), Michael Hedin (fiancee Jackie Schroller), Anthony “Tony” Spencer (Sara), Tyler Spencer (Danielle), Frederick “Ricky” Spencer Jr. and his fiancee, Claressa McKnight; Lauren Miller, Dana Herold (Jeffrey) and Sandy Ashbaugh (Ray); 17 great-grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Sophia Scott; her sister, Nellie Brydon; and her brother, Albert Causer.

SPENCER — Funeral services for Betty J. Spencer, who died Sunday, April 24, 2016, will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Smith Funeral Home, 421 New Castle St., Slippery Rock, with the Rev. Keith McIlwain, pastor of Slippery Rock United Methodist Church, presiding.Family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday and 10 a.m. until the time of service at 11 a.m. Thursday at Smith Funeral Home.Interment will be at Slippery Rock Cemetery.Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Foundation of America, 322 Eighth Ave, 7th Floor, New York, N.Y. 10001, www.alzfdn.org.
