Police: Father was hungover

Son, 4, walked on broken glass

A Butler father was hungover from a night of drinking and sleeping when his 4-year-old son walked out of their home on broken glass and without any shoes on last week. The boy also played with a knife during his unsupervised outing, authorities said.

Butler police on Monday charged Kurt R. Kline, 28, with misdemeanor child endangerment.

A neighbor in the 400 block of Eau Claire Street notified authorities shortly before 9 a.m. that the barefooted boy had appeared at her front door April 19. The child's feet were reportedly covered in blood and dirt.

The boy when asked told the woman his dad was asleep and did not want to be awakened, police said. The neighbor walked the child to his home but she got no answer at the door.

Police later took the boy to his home and also were unable to get anyone to answer the door, even after repeatedly yelling for the defendant.

When asked about a knife that was on the front porch, the boy told police he had taken it from his father's tool box and used it to try and unlock a door to a truck parked in front of the house, documents said.

The cuts on his feet, he explained, were from walking on a broken coffee pot that was on the kitchen floor.

An officer eventually went inside the house and met Kline coming downstairs. It appeared he was hungover and he smelled of alcohol, police said.

The suspect admitted he had been drinking the previous night and was sleeping.

Police noted they contacted Butler County Children and Youth Services to report their findings.
