KC no-hitter quiets Venango

Karns City starting pitcher Jared Stewart combined with Jimmy Thompson to throw a no-hitter Thursday in the Gremlins' 10-win over Venango Catholic.

When Jared Stewart was told he was getting the nod as the starting pitcher against Venango Catholic, the senior immediately felt the butterflies in his gut.

“I was pretty happy,” Stewart said. “I was pretty nervous starting off. Everything was up and out (of the strike zone). But I calmed down a little bit.”

Stewart struck out five in three innings and didn't allow a hit in his first outing of the season. Jimmy Thompson worked a hitless final two innings to complete the no-hitter as Karns City routed Venango Catholic 10-0 in five innings Thursday afternoon at Kelly Automotive Park.

Thompson has also pitched sparingly this season.

“It was Jared's first time out and Jimmy hasn't pitched in almost a month now,” said Karns City coach Randy Collins. “So it was good to get them some work today. They did a great job.”

Holden Martin had a two-run triple in the second inning. Karns City broke the game open with five runs in the bottom of the third inning.

Martin also doubled and Evan Stitt also had a double for the Gremlins (8-3).

Karns City has won three in a row by a combined score of 37-7.

“We're coming around on hitting again,” Collins said. “With guys on base and in scoring position, they're hitting again. This past week the middle of the lineup is getting hot. It's a good time of the year to have that happen.”
