What a relief

Moniteau relief pitcher Nathan Sosigian strick out six batters over the final 2.1 innings Thursday night to preserve the Warriors' 9-7 baseball win over Clarion-Limestone.
Moniteau's Sosigian shines out of bullpen in helping Warriors preserve sloppy 9-7 win

It's a win.

“And that's about the extent of it,” said Moniteau baseball coach Ross Martin.

The Warriors were not sharp on a soggy Thursday night at Kelly Automotive Park. But neither was Clarion-Limestone as Moniteau hung on for a 9-7 win.

“Sloppy game,” Martin said. “Both sides of the diamond. We did enough. Put it that way.”

Through the sloppiness, Moniteau (8-2) was able to persevere thanks to a strong relief appearance from Nate Sosigian.

Lake Pry lasted 4 2/3 innings. A 20-minute rain delay in the middle of the top of the fourth inning affected his sharpness. Sosigian was able to get out of trouble with a 7-5 Warriors' lead.

Sosigian struck out six in 2 1/3 innings to pick up the save.

“He threw strikes and did better than what the final score indicates,” Martin said. “Defensively, we did not help our pitchers out and that has been a theme lately. I know our guys are much better than what they're showing now.”

Moniteau committed four errors in the final four innings that helped Clarion-Limestone climb back into the game.

Sosigian said he was ready to go in relief after the delay.

“I just had to go in, throw hard and throw strikes,” Sosigian said. “That's what I tried to do.”

Moniteau was aided by eight walks issued by Clarion-Limestone pitchers Alex Acree and Taylor Smith.

The Warriors drew five of those walks in the third inning — two with the bases loaded — and scored six runs in the frame to take a 7-2 lead.

The Warriors scored those seven runs on just two hits.

“We got ourselves behind because of our inability to throw strikes and falling behind in the count,” said Clarion-Limestone coach Brad Frazier. “That set the table for them and they capitalized on it. At one point they had nine runs on four hits. That didn't help us at all.”

Clarion-Limestone (3-3), though, battled back.

The Lions had a run wiped off the board when Moniteau appealed at first on a two-out RBI double in the top of the fifth inning by Cam Peters. Umpires ruled Peters missed the first-base bag.

That run would have made it 9-6.

Clarion-Limestone did score two unearned runs in the sixth and had the tying run at second base in the seventh when Sosigian got a groundout to end the game.

Jake Jewart had a pair of hits for Moniteau. Wyatt Geibel also had a two-run double and Zack Adamson drew three walks.

Colby Himes had a triple for Clarion-Limestone.

Moniteau, which has played four games in four days, is taking today off. The Warriors don't play again until Tuesday at Forest Area.

Martin said he is hoping the break will let his players regroup and play back up to their capabilities.

“We have some seniors who have been there, done that,” Martin said. “They need confidence. They need to get out on the practice field and see some success. We've been too sporadic lately.”
