Little things add up

Slippery Rock relief pitcher Dylan Dingel went 2.2 scoreless innings to preserve a 10-2 victory over Karns City Tuesday night at Kelly Automotive Park.
Consistent execution pays off in SR's 10-2 win

The Slippery Rock High baseball team did all the little things that added up to a big victory.

Hit and run plays. Sacrifice bunts. Sacrifice flies. Stolen bases. Moving up 90 feet at every opportunity.

It all spelled a 10-2 win for the Rockets over Karns City Tuesday evening at Kelly Automotive Park.

“It was the most complete game we’ve played so far,” said Slippery Rock coach Nate McCollough. “Our first four games we played some really good teams and Karns City was another one. We scheduled it that way. We wanted to get some good teams on our schedule because the only way you’re going to get ready to play some of the teams we’re going to play later is to do it that way.”

Slippery Rock (3-2) pounded out 14 hits against Karns City, where McCollough played his high school baseball from 2000-03.

Cody Lawniczak went 4-for-4 with a double, two RBI and scored three runs and starting pitcher Ricky Mineo went 3-for-4 with a double and two RBI.

Five Rockets had at least one RBI and Slippery Rock had two sacrifice bunts and two sacrifice flies.

“Situationally today, getting on base and doing what we did, it was the best we’ve looked this year,” McCollough said. “Our two-strike approaches were fantastic. We went the other way and had some flares come down. It felt good.”

Karns City (4-3), though, jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning against Mineo, taking advantage of three walks.

Cullen Williams had an RBI single and the second run scored on a fielding error.

But the Rockets answered back with two runs in the bottom half of the first.

“Getting those early runs was a confidence booster for our guys,” McCollough said. “Once we got back even, it felt like a new game and I think we built off that.”

Mineo, a sophomore, picked up the win despite issuing seven walks in 4 1/3 innings.

“What he did was he gave us a chance to win,” McCollough said.

Another sophomore, Dylan Dingel, pitched 2 2/3 scoreless innings to wrap up the win.

“Dylan’s a starter with a reliever’s mentality,” McCollough said. “He doesn’t care what situation you put him in. He comes in, he does what he’s supposed to do, he throws strikes and he keeps the ball low in the zone. It’s very difficult to hit that way.”

Martin is typically difficult to hit when he’s on the mound for Karns City, but the senior right-hander struggled Tuesday.

Martin lasted just three innings and gave up six runs on eight hits.

“Better hitters. Better team,” said Karns City coach Randy Collins. “He just never got into a groove he was looking to get into.”

Unlike Slippery Rock, Karns City wasn’t able to come up with big hits to take advantage of the walks.

“It was good for us to be playing up against a quality team,” Collins said. “They put the ball in play, sacrificed, had nice two-strike swings. They are a very good team.”

Freshman Tyler Yough pitched the final three innings for Karns City. He was touched up for four runs, but struck out four and didn’t walk a batter.

“He got some valuable experience,” Collins said. “That was good for us to give him an opportunity. He stepped up to the challenge. He gave up a couple of big hits, but that’s what happens when you throw the ball right down the middle against a good hitting team.”
