SV youth Amelio wins state mat title

JACKSON TWP — Seneca Valley youth wrestler Antonio Amelio won the title in the 12-under 105-pound division at the recent PJW State Championships in Erie.

Amelio became the first SV youth to win a state title in this tournament since Travis Rice in 1994.

Four other SV youths — Tyler Chappell at 10-under 60 pounds, Brooks Beres at 10-under 80 pounds, Evan Vetter at 10-under 70 pounds and Zach Hill at 8-under 60 pounds — qualified for the state meet.

At the high school level, two Seneca Valley wrestlers placed at the National High School Coaches Association Championships in Virginia Beach. Nick Montalbano placed fourth in the freshman 132-pound class and Louis Newell, coming off a PIAA runner-up finish, placed sixth in the sophomore 113-pound division.

The Slippery Rock University baseball team had another tough day, enduring a doubleheader sweep at the hands of Californina (Pa.) University Friday afternoon.

Seneca Valley graduate and junior first baseman Carson Kessler hit a three-run home run in the first game, a 7-3 loss to the Vulcans. At the time, the blast gave SRU a 3-1 lead in the top of the sixth inning.

But the bottom fell out in the bottom half of the frame as Cal scored six runs.

Kessler also had a pair of hits in the second game loss.

Butler graduate Mick Fennell picked up the win for the Vulcans.

Fennell, who plays center field when he's not pitching, had a double and a triple in the first game.

Fennell leads Cal (18-12, 11-3) with a .407 average, seven home runs and 27 RBI. He has only struck out three times in 108 at-bats for the Vulcans.

His Game 2 win ran his record to 5-1 witha 4.22 ERA

The Rock (7-26, 2-12) has lost nine of their last 10 games.
