Moniteau rallies past rival KC

Marterella's single caps 3-run uprising in 7th for 7-6 baseball win at Kelly Automotive Park

Aaron Marterella wasn’t sure what type of pitch he hit into right field.

He was more focused on the result.

The Moniteau senior shortstop’s third base hit of the game came with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning and plated Josh Adamson with the winning run as the Warriors edged rival Karns City 7-6 in a dramatic ending Tuesday night at Kelly Automotive Park.

“I think it was a fastball,” Marterella said of the game’s final pitch, thrown by Eric Dodd. “I just tried to cut it in half and got under it a bit, but was able to get it over the second baseman’s head.”

The Warriors, who trailed 5-1 after four and a half innings, were staring at a 6-4 deficit when they picked up the bats in the bottom of the seventh.

Nick Sosigian and Lake Pry began the frame with back-to-back singles. Nathan Sosigian then drove in a run with another base hit, but courtesy runner Wyatt Ifft was thrown out at third base on the play.

After Wyatt Geibel flied out, Adamson singled home Nathan Sosigian to tie the game and the former reached second base on the throw home, bringing Marterella to the plate.

Moniteau (3-0) remained undefeated despite playing subpar baseball for much of Tuesday’s game.

“It’s early in the season,” said Moniteau coach Ross Martin. “We have a lot of players who are still trying to find roles on this team, but we need to be more focused from the first inning.”

Karns City coach Randy Collins wants his team to keep the game in perspective as well.

“I told the guys that it’s early in the season and we’ll see them again,” he said. “We need to take what we learned here tonight and apply it to the games ahead.”

While Nathan Sosigian contributed to the victory with his bat, it was his right arm that kept the Warriors within striking distance.

He relieved Derek Boben with one out in the top of the fourth and the Gremlins up 4-1. After KC’s Evan Stitt drove in a fifth run (charged to Boben) with a groundout, Sosigian walked two batters and hit another to load the bases. But the sophomore got Hunter Schaffner to ground out to squeeze free of the jam.

“I knew we still had a chance to win when I took the mound,” Sosigian said. “When coach (Martin) called my number, I just wanted to give my best effort and help us get back in the game.”

Sosigian did just that. He was charged with one unearned run — when Stitt scored on Marcus Lantz’s single in the sixth frame — in 3 2/3 innings pitched. He struck out three and walked two to earn his first varsity win.

Sosigian’s effort late in the game mirrored that of Karns City starter Holden Martin early on.

The senior allowed one run on four hits in the first four innings. He contributed offensively to his team’s 5-1 lead with a two-run triple in the top of the fourth.

But Martin encountered trouble in the fifth inning. He issued one-out walks to Boben and Zack Adamson. Jake Jewart followed with a single, but Boben was tagged out in a rundown between third base and home. Nick Sosigian reached on an error that allowed Adamson and Jewart to score. Pry’s base hit brought Sosigian home to cut Moniteau’s deficit to 5-4.

Karns City committed three errors in the game, leading to three unearned runs.

“We are usually pretty good in the field,” Collins said regarding the Gremlin miscues. “We had some young guys in the field tonight and it was tough to pick the ball up off the bat.”

Dodd relieved Martin to start the bottom of the sixth and pitched a scoreless frame before suffering the loss in the seventh.

KC’s early lead was fueled by a pair of error-aided runs in the first and third inning — including an uncaught third strike with Lantz at the plate in the third.

Moniteau countered with a single tally in the second inning when Pry scored on Geibel’s double to left-center.
