Freeport clips Mars in extras

The Yellowjackets are for real.

After a botched suicide squeeze bunt attempt in the eighth inning, Kristen Karcher delivered a game-winning single up the middle as Freeport knocked off Mars, 5-4, in softball action Friday.

The Planets built a 4-0 lead in the first inning, getting a three-run homer by Niki Schlegel, but the Yellowjackets (4-0) tied the game with a run in the first and three in the second. Winning pitcher Kristie Radvan belted a two-run homer in the third.

With Radvan on first base and one out in the bottom of the eighth, Ally DeJidas singled, Radvan taking third. Rebecca Fennell's infield single loaded the bases.

A missed squeeze bunt resulted in Radvan being tagged out in a rundown between third and home. But with runners on second third, Karcher produced the game-deciding hit.
