John R. Smith

John R. Smith, 86, of Worthington passed away Saturday at Butler Memorial Hospital.

Born July 29, 1929, in Shirleysburg, Pa., he was the son of the late William and Emma Belle (Pollock) Smith.

During his career, John worked in road construction before spending many years in the coal industry at Findley, West Freedom and Hillard Mining companies. He retired from Worthington Diesel.

John proudly served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. He was a charter member of the Worthington American Legion Post 828 and a member of the VFW.

He enjoyed working outdoors, going to antique stores, steam shows and sprint car racing.

John is survived by his wife, Jean (Kemp) Smith. They celebrated their 62nd year as husband and wife on the day of his death.

He also is survived by his son, Ronald L. Smith and his wife, Pam; his daughter, Deborah L. Hodak and her husband, Jeff; four grandchildren, Josh Hodak, Brock (Wendy) Hodak, Zack Smith and Amber (Matt) Hutchman; five great-grandchildren, Brody and Gracie Hodak, Aubrey Smith and Olivia and Norah Hutchman.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Paul Smith.

SMITH — Friends of John R. Smith, who died Saturday, March 26, 2016, will be received from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the F. Duane Snyder Funeral Home in Worthington.Private services will be Wednesday at the funeral home with the Rev. Robert Hindman officiating.
