Grove City rolls to playoff win

Robby Carmody slams home two of his 30 points Wednesday night in Mars' boys basketball playoff win over Laurel Highlands.

Grove City outscored Harbor Creek by 20 points in the second half to clobber the Huskies 55-32 in a District 10 Class AAA boys basketball first-round playoff game Wednesday night.

Kaiden Young led the Eagles (17-6) with 18 points and Brendan Record added 16.

Grove City shot nearly 86 percent (24-of-28) from the foul line.

Girls Basketball

Union junior guard Lexey Shick almost matched Smethport's team output, scoring 24 points to lead the Damsels to a 37-27 victory over the Hubbers in a District 9 Class A first-round playoff in McKean County.

Tenth-seeded Union (11-12) snapped its 7-game losing streak and will now face No. 2 North Clarion in the quarterfinals at a date, time and site to be determined.

Bowling

Butler placed sixth out of 18 teams at the WPIBL team championship, held at Noble Manor Lanes in Pittsburgh.

The Golden Tornado tallied 2,464 total pins. Hempfield won the title with 2,806. Moon finished in second place, Canon-McMillan third.

Shawn Marcellus had Butler's best single game with a 203, while Hunter Lefever rolled a 201 and team-best 517 series.

The WPIBL girls team championships take place at 3:30 p.m. today at Paradise Island.

Seneca Valley's dominating 63-9 win over Hampton included pins from Louis Newell (113 pounds), Nick Montalbano (132) and Alex Fischer (138).
