Web talk led to charges

SV teacher free on bond

FRANKLIN PARK, Allegheny County — The Seneca Valley teacher charged this week with felony possession of child pornography was allegedly posing as a woman on a dating website to chat with an underaged girl.

He also failed to tell police during interviews that he was a teacher.

Jonathan Brecht, 26, of Franklin Park turned himself in Thursday to be arraigned in Pittsburgh. He was released from the Allegheny County Jail on a $100,000 bail.

Brecht has been a math teacher at Seneca Valley Middle School since 2012. He also is listed as an adjunct faculty member at Community College of Beaver County, according to its website.

Mike Manko, spokesman for the district attorney's office, said that the office first was notified about his job as a teacher on Friday.

“The revelation that this defendant is employed in a setting with young children is a significant concern,” he said in a statement.

The office will continue the investigation and will contact the Butler County district attorney to find out if Brecht has had any abusive contact with children.

In a statement, Linda Andreassi, Seneca Valley communications director, said that Brecht has been suspended without pay by the school district.

“At this time, we have no reason to believe the charges against the suspended employee have any connection with the district,” she said.

He was escorted off school premises on Wednesday after the district learned about the allegations, Jackson Township Police Chief Terry Seilhamer said.

Brecht is not accused of any criminal activity at the school or involving students of the district, though the Jackson police will be examining his school computer, Seilhamer said.

An investigation into Brecht was done by the Allegheny County District Attorney's office starting last summer, according to the criminal complaint filed by detective Lynn Havelka.

Skout, a website and mobile application that allows people to meet and chat, captured an alleged conversation between an adult and a minor during May.

The two parties in the chat identified themselves as a 24-year-old woman and a 16-year-old girl. They discussed finding a place to meet and have sex and the minor sent photographs of herself.

The company reported the conversation to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, which contacted the district attorney's office.

Detectives traced the adult's IP address to Brecht's house, where he lives with his mother. The images of the minor sent during the chat were of a girl between the ages of 12 and 14, according to police.

During am interview, Brecht allegedly admitted to using the website to try and chat with girls about “normal items.” He said that he realized what he was doing was wrong and stopped using the account. He also said that he did not keep the photographs.

On July 17, he met again with police, including an FBI agent, and brought his computer, according to the criminal complaint.

He stated that he has never touched a child and has no desire to be with a child.

He also stated that he worked as a sales associate at Target, but did not mention Seneca Valley or Community College of Beaver County.

His 1.5 TB hard drive was allegedly half-full of photographs of clothed and nude people he had downloaded from the Internet. Police allegedly found three images on the computer of child pornography.

A woman who answered the phone at Brecht's house referred all questions to attorney David Shrager of Pittsburgh.

Sharager on Friday said that he was doing an investigation into the details of the case to prepare a defense. He did not know the status of Brecht's employment at Seneca Valley.

“My intention is to defend vigorously,” he said.

Police say Brecht told them he's never touched a child, has no desire to do that and was willing to take a lie-detector test to that effect.

His preliminary hearing is 1:30 p.m. Feb. 23 at district court in Leetsdale, Allegheny County.
