Butler bowlers clinch Section 2 title

Butler's boys bowling team clinched the WPIBL Section 2 title with a 7-0 sweep of Karns City at Bruin Lanes Wednesday afternoon.

Matt Wetzel paced the Golden Tornado with a 630 series and a high game of 221.

Nick Huff added a 619 series and has the highest average (214.96) of any bowler in Section 2.

Butler (9-1) will compete in the WPIBL team championships next Wednesday and also has punched its ticket to the Western Regional March 12.

Grant Curdo rolled a 525 series to lead Karns City (3-7).

Butler's girls also swept the Gremlins (1-9), with Ashley McCue scoring a 524 series and single of 189. Courtney Sutton had a 360 series for Karns City.

The Golden Tornado girls (7-3) will take part in the WPIBL team championships next Thursday.

In other action:”

Armstrong swept Knoch's boys and girls by 7-0 scores. Bryan Hindman led the Knight boys with a 564 series and 227 game.

Chelsea Cimbala rolled a 566 series for the Knoch girls, including a 213 game.

Boys Basketball

Union overcame a slow start, scoring 43 second-half points in a 67-63 win over visiting Moniteau.

The Golden Knights (16-6) received 21 points from Cole Morris, 15 from Lucas Bowser and 13 from Gavin Hawk.

The Warriors (6-16) hit nine 3-pointers and were paced by 14 points from Aaron Marterella and Derek Boben.

Redbank Valley 61, Karns City 56 — The Gremlins (10-11, 8-8) drained 13 three-pointers, but it wasn't enough to topple the host Bulldogs.

Jimmy Thompson and Chandler Turner both pulled down 10 rebounds in defeat.

Karns City will compete in the upcoming District 9 Class AA playoffs.

Butler placed third in the WPIAL team championships Tuesday and will shoot in the state match next week.

The Golden Tornado shot a 799-65x, finishing behind champion Woodland Hills (800-59x) and runner-up Hempfield (800-57x).
