County leaders will hear views

Public comment period restored

Residents who want to speak at Butler County Commissioner’s meetings now will get two opportunities.

Commissioner Leslie Osche, board chairman, said Wednesday that the public comment period at the end of the meeting will be restored.

The comment period at the beginning of the meeting will continue, but it will be restricted for the discussion of items on the meeting agenda that day. The second period will be for comment on any issue.

Both periods will have a three-minute time limit for each speaker.

The commissioners added a second comment period in 2008, but it was removed in 2013. The commissioners at the time said the elimination would cut down the amount of time the meetings took.

The comment periods will be at both the voting meeting and the agenda- setting meeting that is held the week before the voting meeting.

Osche encouraged the public to attend the agenda-setting meeting, saying that she would rather hear comments from residents a week before voting rather than just before voting.

Additionally, Commissioner Kevin Boozel has requested that the county post the meeting agenda packet online a day before the commissioner’s voting meeting. The packet has information related to the agenda.

Boozel said this will make the county more open, and will cut down on the amount of right-to- know requests the county has to process.

The first packet is expected to be posted by noon on the day before the March voting meeting.
