NA senior wins symphony Young Artist competition

Nathaniel Chen

The Butler County Symphony Orchestra named Nathaniel Chen the 36th annual Young Artist Competition winner.

Nathaniel, a senior at North Allegheny High School, will perform with the symphony at the April 9 concert called “Beethoven’s Ninth” at Butler Intermediate High School.

He will perform “Piano Concerto in G” by Maurice Ravel. Nathaniel started playing piano when he was 6 and has played for 11 years.

He also studies the cello and recently participated in a Central European concert tour with the Pittsburgh Youth Symphony Orchestra.

The Butler County Symphony has held this annual competition since 1980. It alternates between high school aged and college aged students.

This year’s contest was open to any high school age musician in grades nine through 12 within a 25-mile radius of Butler, or any high school age musician in a PMEA District 5 school.

Students auditioned for judges, and the winner each year performs as a soloist with the symphony.
