Planet girls net 8th win in a row

ADAMS TWP — Much like players, coaches can learn from their mistakes.

“Early on in my career, we made the playoffs one year and I didn’t have the team work on fundamentals leading up to the playoff game,” said Mars girls basketball coach Dana Petruska. “It came back to bite us.”

Petruska, who watched her team ride its winning streak to eight games with a 61-38 home victory over Moon in Monday’s regular-season finale, will learn the Planets’ first postseason opponent at tonight’s WPIAL pairings meeting in Green Tree. Then she and the Planets will get to work.

“We will get in our conditioning and work on fundamentals, like ball-handling,” she said.

The Planets (17-5) continue to evolve, even this late in the season.

“We’ve learned so much this year. We have 10 different offenses and each week, I give them a new one,” said Petruska. “Do we run them all to perfection? No, but it’s important to walk through them (in practice). There are a few that we run perfectly, but you go up against a team that has scouted you well, that offense could go stale.

“We are starting to play as a team, it’s taken us this long to know each other’s tendencies,” Petruska said. “Hopefully, that can continue into the playoffs.”

Petruska wants her team to be prepared for anything it may encounter in the postseason.

“The younger players on our team who play AAU are used to running a fullcourt man-to-man defense,” she said. “We are running a zone press and the girls are finally starting to understand it. We’re getting better with it.”

Mars and Hampton (17-5) shared the Section 1-AAA title. Other section champions in the class include South Fayette (18-3), South Park (17-4), Derry (13-9) and Ambridge (19-3).

Mars’ Tai Johnson capped the regular season with 20 points Monday, while Lauren Wasylson scored 14 and Nicole McCloud 10.
