Selling schools is focus

Butler board sets meeting dates

The Butler School District has scheduled community meetings this month regarding the sale of the elementary schools closed in the district consolidation.

The consolidation in May 2015 resulted in the closing of four elementary schools: Broad Street, Clearfield, Meridian and Oakland Township.

The school board Monday night set these dates for the meetings to hear residents’ opinions about what do with the vacant buildings:

n Meridian: The meeting for the Meridian school will be at 7 p.m. Feb. 17 at the school, 135 Sparks Ave.

70E Solutions, a family-owned electrical safety business based in Renfrew, has bid $425,000 for the school. The company is looking into keeping the playground for public use.

Ken McDonald and Brent Thomas also put in a bid for Meridian at $350,000 for a proposed senior residential facility.

The school has an average appraisal value of $530,000.

n Oakland: The meeting for Oakland will be at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 22 at the school, 545 Chicora Road.

Woodbine Oaks, a realty company owned by Monty Edgar, has bid $363,600 for the building to house his electric business, Edgar Electric, and as a commercial rental office space.

Oakland’s average appraisal value is $362,500.

n Clearfield: The Clearfield school meeting will be at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 29, at the school, 719 Clearfield Road.

No bids were made on the building, but township residents, led by Dan Mennor, are interested in acquiring it for use as a community center.

Clearfield’s average appraisal is $236,000.

n Broad Street: Since there was already a community meeting held on the building’s future, another one is not scheduled.

J.M. Beatty Furniture bid $530,000 for the school, and the company is still interested in buying it.

The Center for Community Resources bid $150,000, and while it remains interested, the center does not want that to overshadow those with a greater need for the space, said Executive Director Mike Robb.

The Broad Street school’s average appraisal value is $456,500.
