Video shows burglar in act

Money stolen from art center

A hammer-wielding burglar made off with money from a donation box Sunday night after he smashed a window at the Butler Art Center in downtown Butler, authorities said.

But the crook had little time to enjoy his loot.

Within hours and aided by surveillance video, Butler police arrested the suspect — a neighbor of the art center in the 300 block of South Main Street.

Jeffrey Perritt, 55, of Butler is charged with burglary, trespass, possessing an instrument of crime, theft and criminal mischief. He is in the Butler County Prison on $30,000 bail.

Police were notified of the crime at 8:55 p.m. when a passer-by spotted the broken glass from the front door at the Arts Center.

A break-in last year at the center prompted officials there to install a surveillance camera, which paid off.

The security video apparently captured the burglar using a hammer to smash in the front door window Sunday. The suspect also smashed the glass on a donation box glass and stole an unknown amount of money.

Police said they reviewed the video at 9:15 p.m. Someone at the arts center did, too, and recognized the suspect.

“The (center official) dealt with him before and knew him by the name 'Jeff,'” said police Detective Anthony Fatta.

The official also knew the suspect lived just three or four buildings away.

Police tracked down Perritt at his apartment in the same block on South Main Street. He was wearing the same jacket and shoes as the burglar was wearing in the video, Fatta said.

Perritt was arrested and police later obtained a search warrant for his apartment.

At the home, police said, officers recovered the hammer allegedly used in the crime as well as a hat that the burglar was wearing.

The Arts Center, in a post on its Facebook page, praised police for “a good job” in quickly solving the case.
