Video helps nab art center burglary suspect

A hammer-wielding burglar made off with money from a donation box Sunday night after he smashed a window at the Butler Art Center in downtown Butler, authorities said.

But the crook had little time to enjoy his loot. Within hours and aided by surveillance video, Butler police arrested a suspect — a neighbor of the art center in the 300 block of South Main Street.

Jeffrey Perritt, 55, of Butler is charged with burglary, trespass, possessing an instrument of crime, theft and criminal mischief. He is in the Butler County Prison on $30,000 bail.

Police were notified of the crime at 8:55 p.m. when a passer-by spotted the broken glass from the front door at the Arts Center.

A break-in last year at the center prompted officials there to install a surveillance camera, which paid off.
