Knoch swimmers win section title

The Knoch boys swim team was told winning a section title was something that couldn't be done.

“Because we don't have a pool,” said Knoch boys and girls swimming coach Rick Hassler. “And because of this, that and the other things.”

The Knights didn't listen.

With multiple wins from John Wilson, Derek Ekas and Noah Gumto, Knoch (10-1) wrapped up the first section swimming title in school history with a 90-77 win at Shady Side Academy on Thursday.

“They were all excited,” Hassler said. “They knew it was out there for them to take. So did the girls, unfortunately they came up a little short. They are a tight-knit bunch. They have a good work ethic. They are blue-collar. There are just 10 boys on the team and it's a big accomplishment.

The Knoch girls team also had a shot at a section crown and despite a pair of wins from Brooke Zukowski, the Knights lost to Shady Side Academy 88-77.
