Mars' Lauren Wasylson battles her way through Hampton defenders Laryn Edwards and Natalie Dean (30) during the Planets' 61-57 girls basketball win Thursday night. The victory handed Mars a a share of the section title.
Mars girls edge Hampton, share section title

ADAMS TWP — Like all high school basketball teams, Mars' girls spend a lot of time shooting free throws in practice.

“We have peer-pressure drills,” said Planet coach Dana Petruska. “If you miss your free throws, you don't have to run, but the rest of the team does.”

Maybe that preparation had something to do with the Planets' effort from the foul line in Thursday night's showdown with Hampton. Either way, Petruska was ecstatic about her team making all 12 of its attempts in a 61-57 victory over the Talbots.

It was Hampton's first Section 1-AAA loss of the season and earned for Mars (16-5, 11-1) a share of the section crown.

“That's awesome,” Petruska said of the Planets' clutch shooting. “Our girls showed a lot of composure tonight.”

Sophomore Lauren Wasylson (7-for-7) and freshman Tai Johnson (5-for-5) accounted for Mars' perfect night at the line. The duo combined for 6-for-6 in the final minute of the game.

Wasylson drained a pair with 54 seconds left to put Mars up 57-55. Johnson did the same for a 59-55 edge with 19 seconds remaining. Then, with just 5.6 seconds on the clock, the former calmly knocked down the final two for the four-point cushion her team would win by.

“I shoot a ton of free throws and didn't feel any pressure tonight,” said Wasylson. “I stepped up to the line and knew I was going to make them.”

That's the type of confidence not often seen in a sophomore and Wasylson carries it with her in every aspect of her game. She scored 19 points in Thursday's win.

“She brings so much energy to the court,” said Petruska. “She just loves the game.”

Hampton held a 6-point lead at halftime, but was put on its heels by the Planets, who used the third quarter to post a 22-8 run (shooting 8-of-10 from the floor) and led 43-35 with eight minutes to play.

“Mars was more aggressive in the third and we were passive. I'm not sure why,” said Hampton coach Tony Howard, who coached at Mars for eight seasons (2007-15).

The Talbots (15-5, 11-1) had their own stars to lean on and turned to Ali Collins in the final quarter. The sophomore guard scored 13 of her team-high 19 points in the period. Her bucket with 1:10 left tied the score at 55. But even though they scored 22 points in the final quarter, the Talbots also turned the ball over 10 times in that span.

The Planets faced several deficits earlier in the game, including 11-4, 21-13 and 32-23 early in the second half. But each time, Mars would fight its way back. Johnson's basket with 2:16 left in the third handed the Planets their first lead (36-35) since the opening minutes of the game.

“This team has the ability to not fold up the tent,” Petruska said. “We could very easily have done that in the first half. It's not easy to get kids this age to want to come to practice every day, but this group doesn't want it (season) to end.”

Howard reflected on some missed opportunities when his team was ahead, including missed shots and nine turnovers during the first two quarters.

“I wish it wouldn't have come down to the end like it did,” he said. “We had chances in the first half to get a bigger spread, but we came back against a very good team and I think we can take positives out of this.”

Johnson scored 24 points to lead Mars and Nicole McCloud added 14.

Jenna Lafko tallied 16 points for Hampton and Natalie Dean 14.

Mars' victory avenged a 53-42 loss to the Talbots in mid-January.

“Our goal was to beat Hampton, but we didn't do it the first time,” Wasylson said. “The whole team was looking forward to this game. Both teams played hard, but we played harder.”
