Fire damages plant in northern Butler County

ALLEGHENY TWP — A fire broke out Saturday morning at a plant on Route 38.

The fire was reported about 7:50 a.m. at Oxbow Activated Carbon. Callers to 911 reported seeing flames shooting through the roof of the plant.

The fire damaged the roof of the long building, mostly on its north side, according to Dale Sellers, chief of the Eau Claire Volunteer Fire Department.

It took about an hour to knock down the fire, he said, but firefighters were still dealing with smoldering remains after 10 a.m.

No one was at the plant when the fire occurred, and there were no injuries.

The fire closed down Route 38 for several hours, but limited traffic was moving by after 10 a.m.

Sellers did not know an initial cause of the fire, and said a fire marshal had been called.

The chief said the plant makes carbon used in water filters. That carbon was in the building on fire, but it was not a fire risk.

About seven to eight fire departments initially were called for the fire, according to Butler County 911.

A person at the office in the morning had no comment about the fire.

The Emlenton-based company, which opened its plant the township in 2001, supplies products made of different types of carbon. In June 2002 much of the interior of one of its buildings was destroyed in a fire.
