Man dies in collision with SR high school sign

SLIPPERY ROCK TWP — A man was killed early Saturday morning when he crashed his car into the sign at the entrance to Slippery Rock High School.

Slippery Rock Fire Chief Ken Taggart said the 23-years-old victim was dead when emergency crews arrived at the scene at the intersection of Route 173 and Rocket Drive.

Butler County Coroner Bill Young pronounced the man dead at the scene. He did not release the victim's name.

The accident was reported at 6 a.m.

Young said the man was driving at a high rate of speed when his car crashed through the sign and continued into a neighbor's property.

“The motor was knocked out of the vehicle,” Young said.

The man was wearing a seat belt but it broke during the crash.

He died of major injuries to his body, Young said. An autopsy is not expected to be done.

State police are investigating the single-vehicle crash. Additional information was not available.

UPDATE: State police identified the victim as Andrew T. Chupka, 23, of Butler.
