Freeport coach gets head shaved after 46-45 win

Freeport girls basketball coach Fred Soilis made a deal with his team recently.

Beat Apollo-Ridge and Shady Side Academy and the team could shave the coach’s head.

The Yellowjackets (6-13, 3-9) accomplished half of that goal Jan. 18 when they downed Apollo-Ridge.

They capped off the other half when they edged Shady Side Academy 46-45 Thursday night on a game-winning shot by Kim Mixon with five seconds remaining.

After the game, the clippers came out.

Zoe Soilis led Freeport with 15 points. Jenna Manke added 12.

Mars 58, Deer Lakes 46 — Tai Johnson scored 20 points and Nicole McCloud scored 19 as the Planets downed the Lancers in this Section 1-AAA clash.

Lauren Wasylson also reached double figures in scoring with 11 points for Mars (14-5, 9-1).

Hockey

Seneca Valley scored three goals in the final period to pull out a 5-3 win over Canon-McMillan.

Christopher Lipnicky scored the tying goal 2:43 into the third period off an assist from Alexander Crilley to tie the game.

Shane Galis scored the game winner off another assist by Crilley and Robert Sheils capped the win with the final goal with a little more than a minute to play.

Sheils and Crilley also scored goals in the first period for the Raiders (10-7).

Butler 5, Bethel Park 2 — Jonathan Fair scored two third-period goals to lead the Golden Tornado.

Connor Scott, Christopher Martin and Trevor Gilliland also found the net for Butler (9-6-1), which snapped a four-game losing streak.

Freeport 15, Greensburg Salem 2 — Stone Haberstroh scored three goals and added four assists and Michael Frazetta scored two goals to go with five assists in this Yellowjackets rout.

Robert Reichenbaugh and Thomas Intrieri also scored a pair of goals for Freeport (13-4-1).
