SV ends 8-game hoop skid

Raiders cruise by Lakeview, 57-29

SLIPPERY ROCK — The game was for charity. Seneca Valley benefited from it as well.

The Raiders forced 29 turnovers and placed three players in double figures Saturday in coasting to a 57-29 boys basketball victory over District 10 Class AA foe Lakeview at Slippery Rock University’s Morrow Field House.

The game was part of “The Slam” at The Rock, a Hoops For A Cure event with proceeds going toward the Nathan R. Arenson Fund for Pancreatic Cancer Research.

“It’s always tough playing a Saturday afternoon game following a Friday night section game,” SV coach Victor Giannotta said. “But this was for a good cause and it gave the kids a chance to play in a nice venue.”

And they played well.

After falling behind 6-4 in the first five minutes, the Raiders (5-12) went on a 27-2 run. That opened up a 31-8 lead with 2:14 left in the first half and ended the competitive portion of the game.

It also helped end an eight-game Seneca Valley losing streak. The Raiders are winless in Section 3-AAAA play so far this season.

“We’ve had a rough year, but these kids haven’t quit,” Giannotta said. “They’re still working hard. This game showed that. We don’t want to have to play the spoiler role, but that’s where we’re at right now. We’re still looking to win games.

“They (Lakeview) are very methodical in what they run. We wanted to put some pressure on them and force them out of that.”

Once the Raiders did that, the Sailors (9-6) were lost.

“Once you’re forced out of what you normally do, you tend to make mistakes you don’t normally make,” Lakeview coach Gary Burke said. “We probably took more traveling calls today than we’ve taken all season combined.

“Playing a Quad A team that brings the caliber of athlete and high intensity Seneca Valley does, we had a tough time handling it.”

Payton Skalos paced the Raiders with 12 points. Jamir Carter had 11 points and three assists, Marcus Might 10 points and four rebounds. Justin Koken had four assists.

Every player who dressed for Seneca Valley Saturday saw at least a handful of minutes on the floor.

“It’s always good anytime you can do that,” Giannotta said. “We’re not into running up the score. Everyone works just as hard in practice and when the opportunity is there, everyone deserves a chance to play.”

Sean Carlson sank three treys for Lakeview and led the Sailors with nine points. Jake Doddo had six points, nine rebounds and three assists.

Lakeview’s 29 points marked a season-low.

“This is the least amount of points we’ve scored in a very long time,” Burke said. “Credit Seneca Valley for taking us out of our game.

“We need to handle pressure better. We’ll work on it. This game will be good for us in the long run.”
