Multiple contributions spark KC girls, 61-47

Karns City's LeeAnn Gibson steals the ball and takes it for a lay-up in the Gremlins' 61-47 girls basketball win over Brookville Monday night.

KARNS CITY — The word is out on LeeAnn Gibson and Emily Hegedus.

The top two scorers for the Karns City girls basketball team are difficult to stop and they combined to score 32 points in a 61-47 home win over Brookville Monday night.

But it was the “other” players who contributed just as much to the Gremlins' victory.

Mackenzie Craig scored 11 points, Alyssa Gibson scored 10 points and played scrappy defense while battling an illness and Abby Wolfe hit a big three pointer and was 3-for-4 from the line in the fourth quarter as Karns City was nursing a lead.

“Other people made some shots when they needed to,” said Karns City coach Dave Kerschbaumer. “I think they're getting more comfortable in our situation. Everyone knows Emily and LeeAnn are going to score some points. I think they are getting comfortable around them. They understand when they need to step up and they are doing it.

“Alyssa,” Kerschbaumer added, “is just as tough as her sister (LeeAnn). She's just a little shorter.”

Hegedus, only a sophomore, scored 18 points and showed off her athleticism going to the hoop and on defense. She also had a handful of steals.

LeeAnn Gibson scored 14 points and also had eight rebounds for a Karns City team that looked sharp early in building an 18-8 lead after the first quarter.

That advantage swelled to 26-10 before Brookville (9-5) went on a 10-0 run to draw to six of the lead.

The Gremlins (12-2) settled down and built a 17-point lead early in the fourth quarter but watched it shrink to eight at 54-46 with a little more than a minute remaining.

Elaina Powell was a big reason why Brookville hung close.

The senior guard scored 18 points and hit five 3-pointers — three of them in the second half.

“She's done that for a long time. She's been a clutch player for us over the years,” said Brookville coach Mark Powell. “We gave too many possessions away in the first half.”

While Brookville never seriously threatened, Kerschbaumer was a bit dismayed by the fact his team let the Raiders hang around instead of putting them away.

“That's what we talked about. Being mentally tough,” Kerschbaumer said. “When we get to those situations, we want to increase that lead. That doesn't come on the offensive end. That comes on the defensive end, getting stops. We let them cut away at that lead because we didn't focus on the defensive end. That's how we win games — on the defensive end.”

Kerschbaumer also attributed some of the uneven play to a change in his players' schedule.

“They got out of their routine today with no school,” Kerschbaumer said. “We've had three or four games this year (when we played on a non-school day) and we played that way. Kids are creatures of habit and our focus wasn't there.”

Still, it was an impressive win over a team Karns City may see come District 9 playoff time.

“We wanted to make a statement and I think we did that,” Kerschbaumer said. “Hopefully we got it in our minds we can beat anyone in this district.”
