Athletes shine in indoor track

SR, Butler at different venues

Two Slippery Rock High School athletes had themselves quite a day at an indoor track and field event Saturday at Youngstown State University.

Ryan Putorti ran the 60-meter dash in 7.86 seconds and the 200 dash in 24.5, setting a school record in both events.

Fred Urbaniak also reached a new Rocket standard, completing the 60 hurdles in just 8.51 seconds and placing fourth.

Slippery Rock University Invitational — Butler's Emily Horstman won the girls 55 dash and also anchored the winning 4x200 relay team for the Golden Tornado. The foursome also included Maggie Hohn, Shana Hoy and Maddie Glew.

Taylor Weaver (pole vault) and Alexis Leech (400 run) also earned first place for Butler.

On the boys' side, Slippery Rock's Logan Long went 10-6 to place fourth in the pole vault.

WrestlingMatthew Ferraro, a resident of Adams Township and freshman at Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic, won the 126-pound title at the Bo Woods Varsity Tournament in Indiana, Pa.Ferraro went 3-0, including a pair of pins, and surrendered just two points in his three bouts.The event included 16 schools from Pennsylvania.

Private SchoolsLydia Roth's 14 points and 10 rebounds sparked First Baptist Christian to a 44-21 girls basketball victory over Cornerstone Prep on Friday.Caitlyn Mueller added 11 points and four steals to the win, Michaella Roth scored eight points and Shelby Poorman had seven rebounds and four steals.
