Emlenton man dies 4 days after car-truck crash

FRANKLIN TWP — A Venango County man has died of injuries suffered in a weekend two-vehicle collision at an intersection in the township, authorities said.

Bruce L. Rankin, 54, of Emlenton died Wednesday at UPMC Presbyterian in Pittsburgh.

Rankin was a front-seat passenger in a 2014 Chevrolet Silverado driven by his wife, Pauline M. Rankin, 60, who was not injured, state police said.

The other driver, Daniel J. Deighan, 52, of Cranberry Township, suffered moderate injuries.

Investigators suspect alcohol was a factor in the crash. Deighan was later taken for a blood test and toxicology reports are pending, said police Lt. Eric Hermick.

Police said the crash happened shortly before 7 p.m. Saturday when Deighan, approached Route 422 from Route 488, pulling into the intersection and into the path of the Rankins’ pickup truck.

The truck’s front end struck the driver’s side of Deighan’s 2009 Mazda 6.

A medical helicopter flew Bruce Rankin to UPMC, where he was pronounced dead at 12:04 p.m. Wednesday, according to the Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s Office.

A cause of death is pending an autopsy that is planned today.

Deighan was taken to Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh. His condition was unavailable this morning.

Police said Deighan would be cited for a stop sign violation and possibly other traffic offenses.

Funeral arrangements are being completed by the Hile Funeral Home in Emlenton.
