Overtime pays

Butler's Sam Gross (47) slides the puck past Pine-Richland goalkeeper Anthony Szafranski Monday night at Baierl Ice Complex in Warrendale. The Golden Tornado defeated P-R in overtime, 5-4.
Gilliland goal sends Butler hockey to 5-4 win over P-R

WARRENDALE — Being opportunistic allowed the Butler hockey team to make sure its losing streak stopped at two games.

When Pine-Richland had the puck at the blue line, the Golden Tornado were aggressive trying to create odd-man rushes.

Connor Scott created the rush that ended with Trevor Gilliland scoring the game-winning goal Monday night at the Baierl Ice Complex.

Gilliland beat Rams goaltender Anthony Szafranski with 2 minutes, 5 seconds left in overtime to give Butler a 5-4 win.

It was the second time the Golden Tornado scored on a two-on-one rush.

“Sometimes they held the puck a little too long,” Gilliland said. “You had the opportunity to step up and get on an odd-man rush.”

Butler out-shot the Rams 31-27. Zach Schnur made 26 saves in net for the Golden Tornado.

Gilliland’s goal came after Butler allowed Pine-Richland (1-8) to even the game with 40.8 seconds left in regulation.

Playing with an empty net, Jack Drury scored an equalizer for the Rams which snuck over the goal line.

“We ran around way too much,” Butler coach Patrick Hammonds said. “We got out of our D-zone structure. We got a little excited because of the moment and because it was the end of the game.”

Butler (5-2-1) went back-and-forth with Pine-Richland. The Golden Tornado’s first goal came on a two-on-one with Sam Gross setting up Ben Rodgers.

“Sometimes we pinch when we shouldn’t,” Rams coach Ryan Tessmer said. “We had defensemen pinching and they took advantage of it.”

Andrew Rossi and Antonio Binotto scored the next two goals to give Pine-Richland a 2-1 lead in the second period.

“We had to get back in our spots and know where we are supposed to be,” Gilliland said.

Ryan Rebmann tied the game by poking the puck free in the neutral zone and flipped a puck on net while colliding with defender Kyle Whittingham.

Rebmann ended up sliding on the ice into the boards and the puck ended up in the net.

“I just had to put it on net,” Rebmann said. “I just wanted to get the puck as quick as I could and put it on net.”

Gross then tracked a puck down behind the net and went five-hole to put Butler ahead 3-2.

Binotto tied the game with a power-play goal. Butler’s Ronan Miller scored 11 seconds into the third period to give the Golden Tornado a 4-3 edge.

“We played our game, we were focused and did everything we could in our power to win this game,” Rebmann said.

Butler played its game by making extra effort. That allowed the Golden Tornado to win a wild one.

“One of the things we talked about carrying over from last game is a complete team effort and making sure we were doing it the right way within our structure,” Hammonds said. “It was there with the entire team today. There were ups and downs throughout the game and we needed a few reminders and had to get back on track.”
