[naviga:h3]KC, Aliquippa will meet Friday[/naviga:h3]

The Karns City football team will need to overcome a familiar hurdle to reach the PIAA Class AA semifinals for the first time.

Aliquippa, which won the WPIAL title Saturday with a 44-38 win over South Fayette, will take on the Gremlins at 7 p.m. Friday at North Allegheny High School.

The Quips, who are 13-0, beat Karns City 51-15 in 2012 and 42-14 in 2009 in the PIAA quarterfinals.

The Gremlins, who are 13-0, beat Bedford 21-17 in a PIAA first-round matchup last Friday at Karns City.

[naviga:h3]Tigers, Zimmerman reaching 5-year deal[/naviga:h3]

DETROIT — The Detroit Tigers have reportedly reached a deal with Jordan Zimmermann that would add the free agent right-hander to a starting rotation they were hoping to upgrade this offseason.

The 29-year-old Zimmermann went 13-10 with a 3.66 ERA last season for the Washington Nationals, striking out 164 with 39 walks. The previous year, he went 14-5 with a 2.66 ERA.

CBS Sports first reported the deal, which was pending a physical, on Sunday. ESPN.com, citing an unidentified source, reported the financial terms at $110 million over five years.

[naviga:h3]Miles staying on as LSU grid coach[/naviga:h3]

BATON ROUGE, La. — LSU athletic director Joe Alleva said Les Miles will remain the coach of the Tigers after LSU beat Texas A&M 19-7 and capped a week full of speculation and ominous reports about whether Miles would be back. The Tigers had lost three straight games coming into Saturday night.

Before Miles’ postgame news conference, Alleva told reporters: “I want to make it very clear that Les Miles is our football coach and he’ll continue to be our football coach.”

The Tigers finished Miles’ 11th season as coach 8-3.

[naviga:h3]Toledo’s Campbell off to Iowa State[/naviga:h3]

UNDATED — Matt Campbell left Toledo to take over as coach at Iowa State, accepting a six-year contract starting at $2 million for 2016. Campbell will replace Paul Rhoads, who was fired a week ago after seven seasons.

Campbell is now the youngest coach at a Power Five school. He went 35-15 in four seasons with the Rockets, including 9-2 this season with victories over Iowa State and Arkansas.

Toledo athletic director Mike O’Brien told the AP on Saturday that the school had offered Campbell a contract that would have made him the highest-paid coach in the Mid-American Conference.

[naviga:h3]Memphis’ Fuente replacing Beamer[/naviga:h3]

UNDATED — Virginia Tech hired Memphis’ Justin Fuente as its next football coach, bringing a quick end to its search for a successor to Frank Beamer.

Beamer is retiring after 29 seasons and will now be followed by a 39-year-old coach who has spent the past four seasons at Memphis, turning a struggling program into a winner.

The Tigers, who compete in the American Athletic Conference, were 10-3 last season.
