Coaches, athletes weigh in after Epps resigns from post

Here is what some coaches and athletes say about the resignation of Butler High School varsity girls basketball coach Dorothea Epps, after being head coach for 12 years:

Meghan Lucas, former Butler girls volleyball coach: I can’t blame Coach Epps for resigning. Not at all. Just too much hassle from some parents these days and it has gotten worse every year. Coaches are easy targets. They are not protected by the union or the district.

Rob Lombardo, Seneca Valley girls basketball coach: She believes in structure and discipline and will hold you accountable, yet she has fun with the girls at the same time. That’s a rare blend.

You can’t coach like you did 20 years ago. You’d get fired. The coaches I had couldn’t coach the same way today, and they did nothing wrong back then.

Shannon Doyle, Oakland Catholic girls basketball coach: High school girls look up to women who have leadership jobs. It’s important to have women in those positions. Dorothea is a knowledgeable coach who knew how to keep her team in games.

Mackenzie O’Donnell, former Butler player and a La Roche College basketball player: She helped me get ready for my future, not just basketball. Mrs. Epps and (husband) Paul Epps, they pushed me and taught me how to push myself. I started as a freshman (at La Roche) because of them.

Dana Petruska, Mars girls basketball coach and former Butler assistant: There’s so much entitlement today with our youth. I come from the old school, you earn playing time by putting in time and effort. What you can learn through high school sports is so much more than just playing the game ... That’s getting lost on today’s youths and it’s sad.

Olivia Bresnahan, former Butler player and Duquesne graduate: To me, Coach Epps was like a second mom. It’s not about playing time. It’s about dedication to the program and developing work ethic you can use forever. At least, that’s what it should be.

Maria Baroffio, former Butler player: It’s all politics. Yes, Coach Epps yelled at us a lot. She was intense, passionate. She made us better. If this was guys, we wouldn’t even be having this conversation.

Spencer Stefko, North Allegheny girls basketball coach: It saddens me that a coach like her is no longer working with young players there. Situations like this take away from our society. As a coach, none of us is safe. No matter how well you do a job, you’re one political misstep away from not doing it anymore.

Joe Marak, Butler Basketball Parents Club member: High school sports should just be turned into intramurals anymore. That way everybody can be happy. The idea of fielding a competitive team in a competitive sport can barely exist today. It’s a shame, absolutely a shame.
