Snowy owls show off plumage at aviary

Tundra and Glacier are the National Aviary's snowy owls.

PITTSBURGH — The National Aviary’s new snowy owls “Tundra” and “Glacier” are now showing off their plumage.

This marks is the first time snowy owls have been on exhibit at the National Aviary in more than a decade.

Tundra and Glacier will remain on display through the winter months.

Snowy owls are adorned with a thick coat of feathers to protect them from the Arctic cold. They are the largest of the North American owls by weight, typically around four pounds.

All snowy owls are barred with dark brown feathering when they are young. The males get whiter as they get older, while females keep some dark markings throughout their lives. A snowy owl that is nearly pure white, with very few brown flecks, is a male. That includes the owl that played the role of Hedwig in the Harry Potter films.

Two-year-old Tundra and 5-year-old Glacier came to the aviary from a falconer. Both were deemed nonreleasable.

They occupy an exhibit that was inhabited by a pair of African bateleur eagles until early fall. The eagles have moved to a warmer, indoor location for the winter.

Activities coming up at the aviary include:
