Harmony to hold New Year's races

HARMONY — Registration has opened for two races that are part of the annual Silvester celebration on New Year’s Eve as well as for a New Year’s Day’s Polar Plunge in Connoquenessing Creek.

The races on Dec. 31, which are fundraisers for borough park maintenance and improvements, have new starting times in the town diamond. The 5K goes off at 3:30 p.m., and the 1 Mile Fun Run will be at 4:15 p.m.

These races attract 600-plus runners.

Silvester is an afternoon of family-oriented activities throughout town celebrating its German heritage. The new year is welcomed with a ball drop and fireworks at 6 p.m., which is midnight in Germany.

Runners can register on line at www.active.com or obtain forms on Harmony’s website at www.harmony-pa.us.

Registration on New Year’s Eve will be at the Grace Church of Harmony Youth Center, 538 Main St. Early packet pickup will be available there from 3 to 7 p.m. Dec. 30.

Awards will be given for the 5K, and those completing the 1 Mile Fun Run receive a finisher’s medal.

The Polar Plunge on New Year’s Day is at Harmony’s canoe launch at the western end of Jackson Street and benefits the parks and Harmony Fire District. Awards are presented for best costumes and most money raised.

Plunge festivities begin at noon in preparation for dashes into the creek at 1 p.m.

Registration also is available at www.active.com and www.harmony-pa.us, and plungers can sign up at the event as well. Soup will be served to those who accept the chilly challenge.

Information is available from the borough office at 724-452-6780 or park board chairman Susie Altemus at saltemus@zoominternet.net.
