'Target shooter' faces charges

Police say man was intoxicated

BUTLER TWP — Police said a 27-year-old man was drunk when he fired off his gun up to 30 times in a suburban neighborhood.

No one was injured in the incident that was reported about 7:30 a.m. Tuesday on Dutchtown Road.

The suspect, Braden S. Myers, claimed he was merely target shooting outside his home, according to Butler Township police.

Police on Wednesday charged him with reckless endangerment, using a firearm in a restricted area and public drunkenness,

All available officers, including Police Chief John Hays, rushed to the scene when the call came in for a man seen shooting a gun in the residential neighborhood near Sugar Creek Commons.

The man, the caller advised, was “triumphantly yelling, ‘yeah,’” while firing the pistol, court documents said.

A patrolman, with his own shotgun drawn, got there and almost immediately confronted Myers, who was empty-handed.

The officer handcuffed the suspect and found the 9 mm handgun in his waistband.

Police described Myers, who has no prior criminal record, as “very cooperative” during questioning. He estimated he fired about 30 rounds, emptying two magazine clips in the process.

He smelled of alcohol, police said. A portable breath test device showed his blood-alcohol level was 0.144 percent. A level of 0.08 percent is considered intoxicated for drivers.

Police noted that township ordinances prohibit shooting firearms other than during hunting season or at an approved gun range.
