2 hurt after head-on crash on Rt. 38

OAKLAND TWP — Two men were injured in a head-on crash on Route 38 Wednesday afternoon, state police said.

The accident happened about 1:30 p.m. in front of Balls Beer Distributor.

Police said James Humes, 65, of Karns City was driving north in a Ford Ranger pickup truck and attempting to enter the beer store when he turned into the path of the other vehicle.

John Eva Jr., 69, of Pennsylvania, who was southbound also in a Ford Ranger, was unable to avoid the collision, police said.

Both drivers suffered minor injuries and were taken to Butler Memorial Hospital for evaluation. Police said both men were wearing seat belts and their vehicles’ airbags deployed.

Humes faces an unspecified traffic ticket. Police noted speed was not believed to be a factor.

Fire police reduced traffic on the road to one lane briefly while the trucks were towed.

Assisting at the scene were the Oneida Valley Volunteer Fire Department, the Butler Ambulance Service and East Butler Ambulance.
