Elderly woman robbed in West Liberty home

Police: Suspect nabbed with loot

WEST LIBERTY — A borough man is accused of breaking into a neighbor’s West Liberty Road house over the weekend.

Little did Tyler P. Baptie know, however, but the 90-year-old resident was at home Saturday night, state police said.

The burglary turned into a robbery, according to court documents, when Baptie confronted the elderly woman and forced her to turn over money in her purse.

He also made off with credit cards, jewelry and prescription medication. He later tried but failed to use the credit cards at a Butler Township store.

The suspect was caught about 24 hours later in Butler, where city police found him with some of the stolen property.

Baptie was arraigned Monday on felony charges of burglary, robbery and trespass, and misdemeanor charges of theft, receiving stolen property and four counts of attempted access device fraud.

He also is charged with a summary count of criminal mischief.

Baptie was placed in the Butler County Prison on $50,000 bail following arraignment.

The elderly victim told police that she was seated on the couch at her home shortly before 8:50 p.m. Saturday when a man, later identified as the defendant, appeared, documents said.

She did not know how he got in. Police believe he entered the house after smashing a basement window.

The alleged burglar asked the woman where she kept her purse. She told him in the bedroom, where he went, instructing her to remain on the couch.

Police suspect Baptie took about $250 in currency from the purse. Additionally, troopers said, he stole two gold rings, a gold bracelet and Xanax pills.

Investigators subsequently learned that the defendant unsuccessfully tried to buy hundreds of dollars worth of merchandise, on four different occasions, at the Walmart store, using the victim’s credit cards.

Butler police about 8:50 p.m. Sunday arrested Baptie on an unrelated bench warrant that was issued last month in connection with a 2014 drunken driving case.

When city officers nabbed him on Monroe Street, he was carrying the stolen credit cards and jewelry, police said.

State police on Monday interviewed the defendant at the prison. He admitted breaking into the house, documents said, and taking money and credit cards from the woman’s purse.
