3 suspects charged in spree of break-ins

Three suspected burglars targeted safes and cash registers at more than a dozen businesses in Butler, Allegheny and two other Western Pennsylvania counties late last year, authorities said.

The trio’s teamwork paid off, netting them more than $15,000 in a series of relatively small scores.

However, surveillance videos and photographs eventually helped expose the threesome’s identities, according to investigators with the state police organized crime unit and Ohio Township police in Allegheny County.

Charged Monday were Christopher Morin, 48, of Zelienople; Joseph Keller, 22, of Pittsburgh’s Brentwood section; and Jonathan Hensel, 32 of Pittsburgh’s Baldwin-Whitehall neighborhood.

The cases, filed at the office of District Judge Sue Haggerty in Saxonburg, followed recent testimony to a state grand jury, which recommended charges against the three defendants, linking them to as many as 14 burglaries between October and December 2014.

The rash of break-ins suggested they were related, authorities said. Many of the businesses were in proximity and the crimes were committed at night.

At the scene of the burglaries, police said, was a Kia Sportage, a car that Morin rented and used as part of the purported criminal enterprise.

Charging documents suggested Morin was the leader in the crime spree that covered Butler, Allegheny, Westmoreland and Washington counties.

Keller admitted he was the getaway driver, according to the grand jury presentment.

In all, the stolen loot topped $15,000. Damage to the business properties was estimated at $16,000.

Among the stores the ring hit in Butler County last year were:

n Agway on Route 68 in Butler Township, Oct. 28. Stolen was $20 to $30.

n Hufnagel Majors Trailer Sales on Route 19 in Jackson Township, Oct. 28. Stolen was about $175.

n Katie’s Korner on Mercer Road in Jackson Township, Oct. 28. Stolen was about $2,000.

n Mac’s Route 8 Cafe in Butler, Nov. 26. Stolen was $3,500.

n Freedom Farms Sandwich Shop on Route 8 in Penn Township, Nov. 26. Stolen was $1,100.

n Fox’s Pizza on Route 68 in Harmony, Dec. 8. Stolen was $1,800.

n Skander Tire on Route 68 in Forward Township, Dec. 8. Nothing was stolen.

n ProGas on Route 68 in Jackson Township, Dec. 8. Stolen was about $140.

During the investigation, authorities got a surveillance photograph that showed a rental vehicle, along with a partial license plate, being used by one of the suspects.

Morin was eventually linked to the plate, which showed up in a police database, and revealed that he was on an unrelated arrest warrant.

Investigators said they later found Morin and the rental vehicle at a motel in Marshall Township, Allegheny County.

A search of the car turned up several items, including unique shoes and gloves that were allegedly worn by the burglary suspects and captured by surveillance videos and photographs.

Morin is charged with 14 counts each of burglary and criminal mischief in addition to two counts of corrupt organizations and one count of criminal conspiracy. He is awaiting arraignment on the charges. Morin had been held in the Allegheny County Jail on a prior arrest warrant.

Keller and Hensel are both charged with three counts each of burglary and criminal mischief in addition to two counts of corrupt organizations and one count of criminal conspiracy.

Keller was arraigned and is free on $5,000 unsecured bail.

Authorities said an arrest warrant has been issued for Hensel, who remains a fugitive.
