Thanks for volunteers

This week I was honored to meet William “Will” Fitzgerald, a senior at Franklin Area High School in Franklin. For his senior project he decided to hold a benefit dinner to raise money for homeless veterans.

When asked why he chose this group, Will’s response was simply, “Because someone who gave the ultimate sacrifice should not be homeless.”

Truer words have never been spoken.

On Nov. 14, Will, along with his family and friends, held a benefit dinner and basket auction in Clintonville. He was able to serve more than 90 dinners and he received 48 baskets for the auction. The total amount raised was $1,730.

Will presented this amount to VA Butler Healthcare, all proceeds going to homeless veterans.

This week we celebrate the Thanksgiving holiday, and I want to express my sincere thanks to Will. I’m thankful this holiday season for Will and individuals like him. These acts of kindness create such a positive impact on our veterans’ lives. Our goal at VA Butler is the best care anywhere and we couldn’t do it without people like Will.

Will has decided to serve his country in the U.S. Army, leaving for basic training at Ft. Leonard Wood in Missouri this upcoming June.

I am thankful for Will’s service, and thankful to all those currently serving, and to our nation’s veterans. It is because of their service and sacrifice that we celebrate this holiday season with our family and friends.

As you celebrate Thanksgiving with your loved ones, I encourage you to take a moment to give thanks to the men and women who protect and have protected our way of life. I know I will.
