[naviga:h3]Pursuit policy revised after crash injures 5[/naviga:h3]

Pittsburgh’s police chief is issuing a new policy on vehicle pursuits after a 12-year-old girl and four others were injured in a two-vehicle crash in the city.

Chief Cameron McLay issued a memo Monday that says officers can’t initiate chases unless they believe a suspect in a violent felony is involved.

McLay is also ordering a review of the car chase policy.

Authorities say they recovered two ski masks, a bulletproof vest and a police scanner from a suspect’s vehicle after the crash Sunday in the city’s Bloomfield neighborhood.

Officers were preparing to stop the vehicle for a traffic violation when it sped away.

The driver and a 16-year-old girl in the car were taken to a hospital in stable condition. A 12-year-old in the back seat was critically injured.

A prosecutor and defense attorney say they’re negotiating a plea agreement for a mentally ill woman awaiting trial on charges she drowned her two young sons in their bathtub.

Allegheny County prosecutors and the defense attorney for Laurel Schlemmer, 42, disclosed the deal to a judge at a status conference Monday.

The McCandless woman allegedly told police she heard “crazy voices” before holding her son, Daniel, and his brother, Luke, under water in April 2014. Luke, 3, died that day and Daniel, 6, a few days later.

A psychiatrist found Schlemmer mentally incompetent to stand trial before a judge in July determined she was competent after being treated at a state mental hospital.

The judge set another status conference for Dec. 15.
