Chimney fire damages house

DONEGAL TWP — A small chimney fire caused minimal damage to a house just south of Chicora.

The fire in the 1400 block of Chicora Road was contained to part of the basement, said Assistant Chief Jason Miller of the Chicora Volunteer Fire Department said. It was reported about 2:20 p.m. by the occupant of the house.

That person was able to extinguish most of the fire by the time fire crews got there.

Miller said the fire caused less than $5,000 in damage. He said it was caused indirectly by a wood-burner, starting in the chimney and spreading to a portion of the floor.

The house is owned by Joe Brewer, and is occupied by an unidentified renter.

A neighbor said that no flames were visible from the outside of the house, but some smoke could be seen.

She said that part of one lane of the road was blocked while emergency crews worked at the house.

Firefighters from Chicora, Lick Hill and East Butler responded. Crews went back into service about 4 p.m.
