Man, 36, accused of fraud

He faces hearing next month

A Butler man faces a hearing next month on a felony charge of defrauding the state’s welfare system.

Christopher Podobink, 36, is accused of fraudulently receiving $4,815 in food stamps and medical assistance benefits.

According to the Pennsylvania Inspector General’s office, Podobink allegedly failed to report income to the state Department of Public Welfare in 2014. The office filed charges last week.

Investigators said Podobink in applying for and collecting public benefits did not disclose that he was employed at Standard Bent Glass in East Butler.

Between April 1 and Oct. 31 in 2014, he collected $2,499 in Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits and $2,316 in Medical Assistance Program benefits for which he was not entitled, documents said.

He is charged with a third-degree felony count of welfare fraud.

Podobink’s preliminary hearing is Dec. 7 before District Judge Pete Shaffer in Butler.
