End addiction stigma

Regarding Miriam McCaslin’s letter “Enabling addicts” (Nov. 15).

Addiction is a primary, chronic disease of brain reward. Without treatment or engagement in recovery activities, addiction is progressive and can result in disability or premature death.

We do have an epidemic locally and nationally, but to think we should not treat and save lives is beyond comprehension.

There is often criminal activity involved in getting the money to pay for the drugs, but incarceration has not proven to be the answer.

If the heroin antidote Narcan can save the life of a person, then it seems we all should be on that page and follow with treatment. It is true that relapse frequently occurs, and follow up treatment is necessary. This is not always a choice, but it is part of the disease.

We treat other diseases and accept when people do not strictly follow their doctor’s advice, but with addiction there is the stigma that this is their fault. It is not.

We do have many programs in Butler County, at the schools, hospitals, jails and elsewhere. We must continue to do more: educate the public regarding this disease and quit judging those who are suffering.

The Butler Eagle has kept on top of the issue in trying to keep the public informed. There is help available — the Lighthouse Foundation, Catholic Charities, The VA, Gaiser Addiction Center, BHS, AA, NA and others.
