Drought ended vs. NA

SV hockey posts 1st win over Tigers in 6 years, 10 games

WARRENDALE — Connor Williams took a high stick to the chin in the second period that left a nasty gash and sent blood flowing from the Seneca Valley forward.

Assistant coach Greg Hulbert helped scrub the blood out of the jersey on the bench and Williams didn’t take time off.

The Raiders were focused on playing tougher.

Williams and his teammates displayed a more physical game during a 6-3 win over North Allegheny Wednesday at the Baierl Complex.

“When you are playing a team like NA, they are a great team and you try to play as physical as possible,” Williams said. “Nothing can really slow you down. Just try to set the example for the other guys and try to work hard and play hard and do whatever it takes to get the ‘W’.”

Seneca Valley’s win over North Allegheny was its first in six years, ending a streak of 10 defeats. The Raiders (5-3) also snapped out of a two-game overall losing skid.

“We want to make a statement game and start a path of being consistent,” SV coach Anthony Raco said. “The style of hockey they exhibited tonight is the kind of game I want them to play.”

Seneca Valley was focused on crashing the net. Part of the Raiders’ inconsistency this season came from third-period fatigue.

Seneca Valley ended up outshooting North Allegheny 41-25.

“Putting in the effort and the physical play,” forward Chris Lipnicky said. “This game we were a lot more physical and we wore them down. We hadn’t been wearing teams down. In the third period they were fresh and we weren’t.”

The Tigers opened by landing the first blow.

John Parks skated the puck over the blue line and wristed a shot over Seneca Valley goaltender Alyssa Peterson’s shoulder 20 seconds in.

North Allegheny’s biggest problem started soon after.

Dawson Richard earned a 10-minute game misconduct for boarding about a minute later. It was the first of seven penalties the Tigers drew.

Seneca Valley’s Alexander Crilley took advantage of Richard’s penalty, scoring a minute into the power play to tie the game.

“The thing that separated us today were the penalties we took,” North Allegheny coach Mike Bagnato said. “You get stuff going at the beginning of the game, but if you start taking penalties like we were doing, you put yourself behind the eight ball. Whatever momentum or flow you have going, it changes everything.”

Lipnicky put the Raiders ahead for good with 9 minutes, 30 seconds left in the second period. He got in on North Allegheny goalie Joe Hubert and faked right before sliding the puck inside the left post.

“I wanted to make sure I got it on net in case there was a trailer,” Lipnicky said. “It ended up going in, which was always nice.”

Andrew King doubled the lead with seven seconds left in the period when he collected a rebound and shoveled it in the net.

Williams rocketed a shot underneath the cross bar to put the Raiders up 5-2 seven minutes into the third period.

Peterson made 22 saves for Seneca Valley, while Nic Raible added a goal and Tyler Murphy had two assists for the Raiders. Cam Zahn and Joe Zappia both scored for the Tigers.

Williams, who also scored an empty net goal, thinks Seneca Valley may build momentum from this win.

“It’s a statement game, NA is our biggest rival and we’ve wanted to beat them for years,” Williams said. “It’s the first time we’ve beat them in six years. It’s huge for us after a two-game losing streak to turn it around.”
