ADAMS TWP — Mars seniors Blake Thompson and Eden Fletcher had specific things in mind while searching for where they wanted to play lacrosse in college.

Fletcher wanted to play for a team that perennially competed for championships. Thompson sought a place where he could come in and play.

Both recently signed with the programs they were looking for.

Fletcher picked Division II Lock Haven University, which won the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference and finished with a 20-1 record.

Thompson also chose a Division II program, North Greenville (S.C.) University, which just added the sport last season.

They brought the number of Planets who signed letters of intent to play lacrosse up to three.

Shannon Doyle also signed with Division I Central Michigan University after verbally committing to the Chippewas in the spring.

For Fletcher, the appeal of the Bald Eagles was their attitude. Lock Haven reached the NCAA Championship game the last two seasons, losing both teams to Adelphi.

The Bald Eagles lost last year’s contest 5-4 in overtime.

“I wanted to be a part of a team that wanted to win and strives to win championships,” Fletcher said. “They’ve made it close and I want to be a part of that.”

Fletcher, who plays in the midfield, has helped a young Mars program find their legs.

The Planets have made the playoffs in both their seasons as a varsity program and have a 25-11 record.

Fletcher didn’t pick up the sport until seventh grade and didn’t play club until the past summer.

Working with college coaches helped her grow as a player. When Fletcher started playing, she was primarily coached by parents.

“(College coaches) taught me how to play different,” Fletcher said. “They taught me how to dodge and shoot better. Where to shoot. I wasn’t taught to fake and shoot, I was told to toss it in. That helped a lot.”

Thompson will feel at home in North Greenville’s program. His freshman year at Mars was the program’s first year and the Crusaders will be in their third when he gets there.

North Greenville, which competes in the Conference Carolinas, finished its first season as a program 1-13. The Crusaders are coached by Cory Struss, who is a North Hills graduate.

“There’s a lot of good competition,” Thompson said. “Limestone has won repeat national championships, while Mt. Olive was ranked. I’m really excited to play in a competitive conference.

Thompson, who has started 48 games in his career and played since fifth grade, was named all-section and all-WPIAL last season.

He scored 59 goals for the Planets and has 124 in his career.

Thompson’s biggest focus before he makes it to college will be taking advantage of his 5-foot-7 frame.

“Being able to find my style of play,” Thompson said. “Since I’m only 5-7 I’m going to find myself against the pole, who’s over 6-foot. I want to improve my stick skills to shoot around them and deceive them. I want to use my height to advantage and find every way to attack weaknesses.”
