Moving up and stepping up

Mars hockey blanks Norwin, 10-0, showing no trouble with Class AA

WARRENDALE — Without the services of its top scorer, the Mars hockey team didn’t miss a beat.

Forward Noah Raymundo, who entered this week with 11 goals and 14 points, missed Monday’s game against Norwin due to a prior commitment, but seven of his teammates scored at least one goal in a 10-0 shutout of the winless Knights at Baierl Ice Complex.

“Our scoring has been pretty spread out,” said Mars coach Steve Meyers. “We have a bunch of kids at eight or nine points.”

That balance was on full display in the first period. Beau Heakins (2), Jonathan Kowalkowski, Tyler Grau, William Scurci and Cory Riemer all beat Norwin goalie Anthony Barca.

“In our last game (a 3-2 loss to Moon last Thursday), we let one slip away and just didn’t play that well,” Meyers said. “We wanted to come out tonight and get back to basics.”

Mars junior goalie Tyler Spreng was not tested much, making three saves in two periods, but Meyers is pleased with his play so far this season. Spreng is now 6-2 with a 1.64 goals-against average.

“He’s been solid for us and is growing into a more steady goalie than he was the last few years,” said Meyers. “This is his third year as a starter.”

The Planets are in their first season of competing in Class AA and have defeated the likes of North Hills, Bishop Canevin, Mt. Lebanon, Quaker Valley and Chartiers Valley. Their other defeat came against Baldwin.

“Double-A is a lot more intense, but we can handle it,” said Heakins, who ended the game with two goals and an assist. “I think we have what it takes to compete for a title at this level. It’s just a matter of bringing our mental game.”

“We just have to bring it every night,” said Meyers. “For the most part, we have.”

Kowalkowski’s two goals and two assists Monday give him a team-leading 17 points while Heakins has 15.

Also scoring for Mars were Ryan Wasylson (2) and Keaton Hanna.

Thomas Schall was in goal for the Planets in the third period and stopped eight shots to preserve the shutout.

Barca faced 39 shots in the first two periods and stopped 30 of them.

Mars travels to Center Ice Thursday to take on Penn-Trafford.
